One thing that stuck with me most is the importance of having effective and appropriate instruction and materials for all readers acorss the curriculum. The chapter also mentioned that instruction from reading specialsists is very important and essential. However, it also states the use of high qualified reading instruction for struggling readers within the classroom is also essential. I question whether our curriculum does that for our struggling readers and are we as a building using all our resources effectively to meet the needds of these readers.The chapter also mentioned using funds that are provided to schools to enhance the classroom with the appropriate materials to meet the needs of struggling readers. I found myself evaluating the way I address the needds of these students in my classroom. I was hoping for more suggestions and reading stategies to use in my classroom. I felt validated that I am doing what is considered effective.

\nI did pick up some ideas such as: clap out syllables to help decode a word or use the "pause-prompt-praise" technique to help decode. The key for struggling readers is to increase engaged reading time. I'm trying that using volunteers to take these kids one on one to reread their books to work on fluency and accuracy. It does seem to help and then during independent reading they seem more confident and engaged because they know they can be successful with these books.

\nThe book mentioned an effective use of reading teacher support. We do use our reading teachers to take our intensive students. In some ways, it confirmed that my instruction was most effective and in other ways helped me learn more ways to incorporate reading into my instruction in other subjects and to utilize my time to help support struggling readers. I made note of what stood out for me. I enjoyed reading the observations of the teachers-when one teacher encouraged her student by making a logical guess of a word, I remembered that it is important to notice when a student is making the connections-using skills that were taught. I also thought it was interesting that in the schools observed, aides were trained to work with struggling readers to give them extra support during the day and to assist in interventions. Other specialists were working with students on skills that were practicing or reinforcing skills learned in class. More \u201cpush-in\u201d support proved to be successful. In both classrooms, it seems that the teachers spent much less time using whole group instruction or even mini-lessons, but more time rotating groups, doing guided reading, centers\u2026the students always seem to be reading books on their level or learning word building\/decoding\/reading skills that they needed rather than having lessons on \u201cgeneral\u201d reading skills.

\nThere was also mention of before and after school support or support during the day that does not exist at NC. That extra support seemed to make a big difference in the struggling reader\u2019s success.
\nIn the second classroom, another thing I noted and found interesting was that teachers were meeting with specialists on a twice monthly basis. From those meetings they were able to prepare their instruction together so that the specialist was doing more things in conjunction with what is taught in the classroom.

\nThe engagement activities included items that would be interesting to pursue.
