Phon Awareness Info Hi Gals!
I read chapter 7 and was first delighted that we are doing what research deems as effective in the quest to teach children to read beginning with phonemic awareness as early as K with Kidwriting...we take 30-40 minutes each day to have students either tracking some form of reading, working with letter names & sounds...while it may not happen in a solid chunk of time...as we read and encode words and concepts across the curriculum we are supporting the children in phonemic awareness, phonics strategies, and then onto decoding multisyllabic words.
This chapter also gave some creative and interesting games/activities that although they could be picked apart and used in K (some maybe towards the end of the year), they seem great for 1+... On page 164 is using blending and segmenting....On pages 165-171 is "Making Words", it uses one large word to have the students move the letters around to make other words and then "group" them...On pages 171-174 is "Using words you Know" and it uses rhyming words...and finally, on pages 174-176 is "Word Detectives" and it works on pronunciation/spelling/"meaning" relationships, using clues from big words to figure out the decoding/spelling/meaning of smaller words.
It was a pretty interesting read.
